New movies in-store this week, all of the film and tv releases that get the fopp stamp of approval in one handy place.

Check out all of our favourites below.

20th Century Women

Set in Santa Barbara, 20th Century Women follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother, raising her adolescent son Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann, in a breakout performance) at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion.

Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing – Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbour.

Letters From Baghdad

Directed by Zeva Oelbaum and Sabine Krayenbuhlm, Gertrude Bell was a pioneering English writer, archaeologist, diplomat and spy whose travels through the Arabian desert gave her local knowledge unparalleled by her British peers. Recruited by British Military Intelligence after World War I, she played a significant often unrecognised role in British imperial policy-making in the Middle East, notably Iraq. Openly critical of colonial practices, Bell s insights are a singular, prescient prism through which to understand both the Middle East and the all-male inner sanctum of British colonial power.

Reflecting on the life, work and character of this remarkable woman, Oelbaum and Krayenbühl weave together a rich tapestry of fascinating archive alongside Bell s writings, letters to her parents voiced by Tilda Swinton, and testimony from peers including TE Lawrence and Vita Sackville-West. Though writing a century ago, the acute contemporary relevance of Bell s words is astonishing at times even chilling.

Cezzanne Et Moi

Guillaume Canet and Guillaume Gallienne star in this French drama written and directed by Danièle Thompson. The story focuses on the friendship between 19th century post-impressionist painter Paul Cezanne (Gallienne) and novelist Émile Zola (Canet). Coming from a poor family, Zola soon gains notoriety as a successful writer, while Cezanne, who comes from a wealthy background, struggles to gain acceptance for his work as an artist. Despite their differences, the pair form a strong bond and both move to Paris to continue their careers.

However, when a character in Zola’s latest book seems to be based on Cezanne’s struggles as a painter, the pair clash and their relationship soon becomes strained. The cast also includes Alice Pol, Déborah François and Sabine Azéma.

Patriots Day

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Peter Berg, Patriots Day is an account of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the everyday heroes who inspired the world in the extraordinary hours that followed.

In the aftermath of an unspeakable act of terror, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again.

Jamestown: Season 1

From the makers of Downton Abbey – 1619, Virginia: on what feels like the edge of the world sits the first British colony of Jamestown. For 12 years, it has been populated only by men, but the settlement is shaken up when the first women, including Alice (Sophie Rundle), Verity (Niamh Walsh) and Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick), land in this breathtaking wilderness. Twisting storylines follow the disruptive new arrivals as they make an immediate impact and are thrust into a new world of love, desire, power and survival. While love triangles, bitter rivalries and fierce competition cause conflict for the residents, ultimately they are bound together by their resolute will to survive and thrive in their new lives.

Written by Bill Gallagher, the eight part drama is set during a unique period of adventure and features an ensemble cast that also includes Max Beesley, Dean Lennox Kelly, Stuart Martin, Matt Stokoe, Jason Flemyng, Steven Waddington and Burn Gorman.
