Stalker


Deep within the Zone, a bleak and devastated forbidden landscape, lies a mysterious room with the power to grant the deepest wishes of those strong enough to make the hazardous journey there. Desperate to reach it, a scientist and a writer approach the Stalker, one of the few able to navigate the Zone’s menacing terrain, and begin a dangerous trek into the unknown.

Adapted from Arkady & Boris Sturgatsky’s novel Roadside Picnic, Andrei Tarkovsky’s second foray into science fiction after Solaris is a surreal and disturbing vision of the future.

Hauntingly exploring man’s dreams and desires as well as the consequences of realising them, Stalker has been described as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time.

Sátántangó


Seven-hour black-and-white epic following life in a small, dilapidated post-Communist Hungarian village where nothing ever happens and nobody wants to be there.

Adapted from a novel by László Krasznahorkai, the saga is presented through chapters looking at life from the viewpoint of each of the different villagers, all of whom want to leave as soon as they receive a much-anticipated cash payment they are expecting.

The film won the Caligari Film Prize as well as the Ecumenical Jury Prize Special Mention at the 1994 Berlin International Film Festival.

Mary Shelly


The tempestuous romance that inspired one of Gothic literature’s most influential works is brought to life in Mary Shelley, a luscious and moving period drama starring Elle Fanning as the radical young writer. When 16 year old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin runs away with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, her family are horrified.

Young and passionately in love, at first she relishes life amongst the radical Romantics. But as time goes on, Percy’s betrayals and indiscretions begin to test their relationship. One day, on a trip to Lord Byron’s mansion in Geneva, Mary is challenged to write a ghost story. Drawing on her experiences of heartbreak and the dark side of humanity, she creates ‘Frankenstein’, a work that will shape the literary world for centuries. With a strong ensemble cast including Douglas Booth, Bel Powley and Maisie Williams, this rousing and exquisite biopic balances sumptuous period detail with a timely feminist message.

Directed by Saudi Arabia’s first female filmmaker, Haifaa al-Mansour (Wadjda), it’s a vivid tribute to Shelley’s passion, courage and craft – and a reminder of her enduring relevance today.

A Fantastic Woman


Sebastián Lelio (Gloria) returns with a groundbreaking, deeply humane and Academy Award-winning story about a trans woman’s fight for acceptance. Anchored by a powerhouse central performance from rising star Daniela Vega, this Oscar-nominated film is an urgent call for compassion towards a community that faces bigotry and hostility on a daily basis.

Vega plays Marina Vidal, a young singer whose life is thrown into turmoil following the sudden death of her partner, Orlando. Met with suspicion from the police and contempt from her lover’s relatives, Marina finds herself placed under intense scrutiny, with no regard for her privacy, or her grief. As the AIDS epidemic tears through their community, the members of ACT UP Paris are fighting for survival. I Am Not A Witch


Zambian-born Welsh director Rungano Nyoni is set to make her mark on British cinema with her groundbreaking first feature, I Am Not a Witch. Sharply satirical and boldly provocative, the film garnered incredible praise from audiences and critics alike at the Cannes 2017 Directors’ Fortnight. When eight-year-old Shula turns up alone and unannounced in a rural Zambian village, the locals are suspicious.

A minor incident escalates to a full-blown witch trial, where she is found guilty and sentenced to life on a state-run witch camp. There, she is tethered to a long white ribbon and told that if she ever tries to run away, she will be transformed into a goat. As the days pass, Shula begins to settle into her new community, but a threat looms on the horizon. Soon she is forced to make a difficult decision – whether to resign herself to life on the camp, or take a risk for freedom.

At times moving, often funny and occasionally surreal, I Am Not a Witch offers spellbinding storytelling with flashes of anarchic humour. Audacious and unforgettable, it showcases Rungano Nyoni as a fresh and fearless new voice in British film.

L'amant Double


François Ozon returns with L’Amant Double, a sleek but gleefully irreverent erotic thriller that sees the prolific French auteur ramping up the sexual tension while keeping his tongue firmly in his cheek.

Good Time


Following the mind-bending Heaven Knows What, celebrated filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie return to the mean streets of New York City with Good Time, a hypnotic crime thriller that explores with bracing immediacy the tragic sway of family and fate.

In The Fade


Critically acclaimed filmmaker Fatih Akin (The Edge of Heaven) returns with In the Fade, a gripping, edge-of-your-seat contemporary thriller exploring the lengths one woman would go to seek retribution after a brutal terrorist attack. A model Swedish family – handsome businessman Tomas, his wife Ebba and their two beautiful children – are on a skiing holiday at a high-end resort in the French Alps.
