With vinyl reissues from New Order, The XX, Fela Kuti and more, January is shaping up to be a great month for record collectors. Here’s our picks for January.

the xx – coexist – 10th anniversary clear vinyl

 

release date: 13th january 2023

 

with ‘coexist’,the xx defied any perceived ‘difficult second album’ pressures to create a record that cemented their status as a truly global breakout act. on the follow up to their acclaimed, era-defining debut, the london based trio of romy madly croft, oliver sim and jamie smith (aka jamie xx) continued to deal in compelling, sparse atmospherics but expanded their musical world, especially through producer jamie’s growing electronic sound palette. to celebrate ten years of ‘coexist, the xx will release a limited edition, crystal clear vinyl pressing of the record.

the courteeners – st jude

st jude was awarded the ‘guardian first album award’ upon release in april 2008. the album contains three top 40 singles, ‘not nineteen forever’, ‘what took you so long?’ and ‘no you didn’t, no you don’t’. it was produced by stephen street and has been remastered for its 15th anniversary by john davis at metropolis studios, who also mastered the album back in 2008. 

new order – lowlife

new order are delighted to announce the release of the definitive edition of their 1985 studio album ‘low life’. the collection includes an lp (180g), 2 x cds, 2 x dvds, a book and features unreleased rare material across the different formats and new sleeve designs. cd 2 contains previously unreleased mixes and alternative versions, including ‘love vigilantes’ and ‘sub-culture’ instrumentals, ‘sooner than you think full length unedited’. the two dvds include an unreleased performance from the manhattan club, belgium and rarely seen footage from rotterdam arena (netherlands), international centre (toronto, canada) and a bbc filmed whistle test at the hacienda, 1985.

cymande – cymande

With the release of their self-titled debut album in 1972, Cymande emerged as innovators of the black British music scene. Taking influences from their Guyanese and Jamaican roots, the band fused reggae bass lines, Afro-tinged Nyabinghi percussion, psychedelic touches, and American-style funk into a unique sound they’ve since dubbed as “Nyah-rock.” While they were embraced in the US, back home they were largely ignored and soon forgotten by a music business beset by prejudice against homegrown black talent. Partisan Records will reissue Cymande’s seminal debut, newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios and available for the very first time on translucent, orange crush vinyl. Cymande features several of the band’s best known – and oft-sampled – classics like “Dove,” “The Message” and more.

green day – nimrod

this 25th anniversary edition includes the original album, one disc of previously unreleased ‘nimrod’ demos, and a live set from philadelphia recorded one month after ‘nimrod’ was released. the 14 track demos disc includes two unreleased green day tracks (‘you irritate me’ and ‘tre polka’), plus a cover of the classic elvis costello song ‘allison’ (previously unreleased). the live album was recorded at the electric factory in philadelphia on november 14 1997. the 20-songset includes several songs from ‘nimrod’, plus fan favourites from their previous albums and singles.

grandmaster flash and the furious five – the message

debut studio album by the legendary american hip-hop group, originally released in october 1982 on sugar hill records and featuring arguably the most influential hip-hop single of all time in ‘the message’, together with ‘scorpio’ – one of the greatest electro recordings ever produced. a gritty, plain-spoken and vividly cinematic portrait of black street life in new york circa ’82 and a fascinating time capsule of rap’s early attempts with the album format – this album earned respect on its own terms.

fela kuti – shakara – 50th anniversary

 

release date: 13th january 2023

 

fela kuti (1938-1997) was a nigerian musician, producer, arranger, political radical, outlaw and the originator of afrobeat. a titanic musical and sociopolitical voice, fela’s legacy spans decades and genres, touching on jazz, pop, funk, hip-hop, rock and beyond. ‘shakara’ is the sixth in the series of celebratory fela 50th anniversary reissues. the album is the sound of afrobeat’s maturation as a global music. fela’s pidgin english lyrics extend his music’s audience beyond yoruba speakers and make his words understandable across the anglophone world.

alabama shakes – boys & girls

10th anniversary edition of alabama shakes’ internationally acclaimed debut album, ‘boys & girls’. hailed as one of the best albums of 2012 by rolling stone and numerous other publications, ‘boys & girls’ entered billboard’s independent albums chart at no. 1. it went on to attain platinum certification and earn the band multiple grammy nominations. lead single ‘hold on’ was voted the #1 best song of 2012 by rolling stone. the second disc features 11 tracks from the band’s explosive live performance on kcrw’s ‘morning becomes eclectic’, which aired in the months leading up to the album’s release.

eric clapton – the complete reprise studio albums – volume ii

eric clapton’s studio albums for reprise records are among the most beloved of the guitarist’s storied career and the focus of a new series of limited-edition, vinyl-only boxed sets. the first instalment, the complete reprise studio albums – volume i, is available now the 180-gram, 12-lp set features clapton’s first six studio albums for reprise (money and cigarettes, behind the sun, august, journeyman, from the cradle, and pilgrim) along with an additional lp of rarities from the era. the second instalment, coming in january, features 10 lps that cover all five albums clapton recorded for reprise between 2001 and 2010, plus an lp exclusive to the collection that includes rarities from the same time.

Melanie Martinez – Cry Baby

Melanie Martinez’s debut album ‘Cry Baby’ has remarkably kept growing in stature since its 2015 release, now approaching its high-water mark of 1 billion global audio streams for the second consecutive year. On this expanded deluxe edition, ‘Play Date’ and 2 additional digital bonus tracks (‘Teddy Bear’ and ‘Cake’) are – for the first time – added to the original, standard vinyl album.
