February’s vinyl reissues

Fopp's Picks

With vinyl reissues from 10cc, The Cult, Whitney Houston and more, February is shaping up to be a great month for record collectors. Here’s our picks for February.

Whitney Houston – Whitney

release date: 10th february 2023

Reaching 10x Platinum status, Whitney Houston’s GRAMMY-nominated second studio album went Diamond-certified, adding to the artist’s superstardom that eventually included being the first African-American woman to earn three Diamond album certifications. ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)’, ‘Didn’t We Almost Have it All’, ‘So Emotional’, and ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’ all turned into Billboard Top 10 Singles and – along with previous winning hits – gave her seven consecutive #1 singles.

Sleep – Dopesmoker

release date: 10th february 2023

Recorded in 1996 and not released (in slightly different edit/mix) until 1999 under the title ‘Jerusalem’, the legend and lore behind ‘Dopesmoker’ would overshadow an LP of any lesser significance. But the 63-minute magnum opus dedicated exclusively to the sacrament of marijuana is not just the pinnacle of the goofily named stoner metal genre. it’s inarguably one of the most important and influential albums of all time.

Tubeway Army – Tubeway Army

release date: 10th february 2023

Tubeway Army was the name of Gary Numan’s band. Formed in 1977, their self-titled debut album was released at the tail end of 1978. The album was a segue from the punk-leaning sounds of their early singles, to the pioneering electronic music that Gary Numan became known for. Shortly after this album’s release, Tubeway Army recorded their follow-up, ‘Replicas’, which contained ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’, which became the first synthesizer-based number 1 hit of the electronic era in 1979. After its release, Numan opted to drop the Tubeway Army name and release music under his own name, retaining the musicians from Tubeway Army as his backing band.

Haircut 100 – Pelican West 40

release date: 24th february 2023

Half-speed master edition of ‘Pelican West’, Haircut 100’s much-loved 1982 debut album. This edition of the album has been newly mastered by Phil Kinrade, and expertly cut using transfers of the original half-inch digital audio tapes using precision half-speed mastering by Barry Grint at AIR Mastering. The equipment at AIR Mastering uses balanced mains power for improved performance and lower noise and the digital equipment is locked to an extremely accurate digital clock to reduce jitter. The Neumann VMS80 lathes and cutting amplifiers used have been fully renovated and modified to enable half-speed mastering.

Booker T. & The M.G’s – Green Onions

release date: 24th february 2023

One of the most popular instrumental songs ever, ‘Green Onions’ started out as a band jam at a demo recording session for rock’n’roll singer Billy Lee Riley with the famed Stax Records house band. Stax label head Jim Stewart liked what he heard and recorded what would become the basis for the band’s debut album. The audio has been completely remastered and the packaging features all new liner notes penned by American author David Ritz, who interviewed two of the founding members: Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper for this edition.

10cc – Deceptive Bends

release date: 17th february 2023

Formed in 1972, 10cc were at once commercial, at once strange – described as the ‘missing link between the Beatles and Blur’, it was rare to have four talented writers, singers and multi-instrumentalists all under one roof; but in Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Lol Creme and Kevin Godley, 10cc had just that. Following the departure of Godley and Creme, Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman continued as 10cc and made ‘Deceptive Bends’ (1977), which included two of the group’s most enduring hits, ‘The Things We Do for Love’ and ‘Good Morning Judge’. It closes with the career best-equalling ‘Feel the Benefit’.
