the smashing pumpkins – siamese dream
release: 18th april 2025
available on double vinyl
When Siamese Dream dropped in the summer of 1993, it was immediately hailed as alternative rock’s first great post-Nevermind hope. While the album became a huge commercial success, it also pushed the boundaries of ‘alternative’ music further. By blending neo-psychedelic AOR guitars—thanks to the band’s Boston influence—with Billy Corgan’s ‘outsider’ lyrics, Siamese Dream painted a rebellious image, yet still aimed for mainstream appeal. This mix resonated with both the young lollapaloozers and classic rock radio listeners. The album’s standout feature is the monumental wall of guitars crafted by Corgan and co-producer Butch Vig—sometimes using up to 32 guitar tracks on a single song—that creates a powerful, electrifying sound. Along with Jimmy Chamberlin’s powerhouse drumming, the album’s thick guitar layers from Corgan and James Iha give Siamese Dream a fresh feel that remains compelling with each listen—something rare for a top-ten album.
