Fopp’s picks

August 2025

august is here, and it’s packed with fresh new releases – here are the standouts we can’t stop talking about this month.

blood orange – essex honey

release: 29th august 2025
available on double vinyl / cd

essex honey is dev hynes at his most intimate and expansive, a diaristic, dream-hazed journey through grief, memory, and the strange comforts of music. written in the afterglow of loss and set against the ghostly backdrop of essex, the album weaves punk-fuzzed acoustics, swirling cello, and analogue warmth into something tender yet defiant. echoes of his early blood orange work meet voices from the present, with stunning contributions from the durutti column, mustafa, caroline polachek, daniel caesar, lorde, zadie smith, tirzah, brendan yates and mabe fratti. self-produced and shaped with mikaelin “blue” bluespruce and heba kadry, essex honey is catharsis in full bloom. it’s a record that mourns and celebrates in the same breath, finding new beauty in the act of remembering.

deftones – private music

release: 22nd august 2025
available on alternate artwork fog vinyl / alternate artwork cd / clear vinyl / cd

private music is deftones at their most elemental and elevated – a heady, propulsive dive into beauty, brutality and beyond. across 11 meticulously crafted tracks, the band conjures a world that is both grounded and otherworldly, rooted in dense riffs, haunted textures and moments of unexpected grace. reunited with producer nick raskulinecz (diamond eyes, koi no yokan), they’ve sculpted an album that feels like a lucid dream in freefall – familiar yet surreal, intimate yet vast. themes of inner survival, ecological awe and spiritual untethering run through it like static. this is deftones not just refining their sound, but transcending it. it’s a trip.

mac demarco – guitar

release: 22nd august 2025
available on transparent orange vinyl / vinyl

guitar is mac demarco’s first proper studio album since 2019, and it finds him at his most stripped down, sincere and self contained. recorded alone over twelve days in his la home studio, the 12-track album peels back the layers to reveal mac in sharp focus – no frills, no facade, just raw, melodic snapshots of life as he lives it now. following the sprawling chaos of one wayne g and the road-weary haze of five easy hot dogs, this is a quieter triumph: warm, loose, and full of feeling. guitar doesn’t just mark a return – it’s a reintroduction, it’s the sound of an artist pausing, reflecting, and playing purely for the joy of it.
