il postino

dual format blu-ray & dvd

One of the most moving and poetic films ever made, Michael Radford’s epoch-making IL POSTINO (aka The Postman) is now presented in a stunning restored version. Telling the fictional story of the real-life Nobel laureate poet Pablo Neruda’s exile to a tiny island off Italy where, being a high-profile figure, he receives such huge quantities of mail that the local post office must hire an extra postman: Il Postino. Though shy and poorly educated, our postman (Massimo Troisi) is so intrigued by Neruda (Philippe Noiret ‘Cinema Paradiso’) that he devises ploys to engage the attention of the great poet. The unlikely duo become friends as Neruda is charmed by the fresh simplicity of the postman whose love for poetry he then applies to woo local beauty, Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta ‘The World is Not Enough’). Framed by an unforgettable Oscar®-winning score by Luis Bacalov, the duo’s on-screen charm, coupled with Radford’s unobtrusive yet inspired direction, make this an undisputed masterpiece – which, like all great art, speaks to our subconscious, here with warm loving humanity… yet also light-hearted fun

two women

blu-ray

TWO WOMEN finally gets the release it deserves, pristinely restored and re-mastered in HD, doing justice to this neo-realist masterpiece which won Sophia Loren an Oscar® for ‘Best Actress’ — the first ever in a foreign-language film. Uniquely, this release is presented in two versions: one in Italian and one in English, dubbed by Loren herself. The film tells the story of a young widow, Cesira (Sophia Loren), and her 12-year-old daughter who flee war-ravaged Rome to Cesira’s native village in Ciociaria. As the allied forces push back the German occupation, the two women fall victim to a devastatingly brutal act at the very hand of the country’s liberators. Directed by Vittorio De Sica (Umberto D.Marriage Italian Style), TWO WOMEN is a magnificent and compassionate depiction of a country at war, featuring powerful performances from Sophia Loren (A Special DayYesterday, Today, Tomorrow) and Jean-Paul Belmondo.

marriage italian style

blu-ray

Based on one of the most successful Italian plays ever, “Filumena Marturano” by playwright and philosopher Eduardo De Filippo, MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE is an exhilarating comedy (nominated for two Oscars® — Best Foreign Picture and Best Actress) starring a combative Sophia Loren as a woman who’ll stop at nothing to keep her lover. Both Loren and co-star Marcello Mastroianni (La Dolce Vita, 8½) are more irrepressible than ever, their talent, exquisite timing, and sheer chemistry — emphasised by the direction of award-winning Vittorio De Sica (Umberto D., Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) — exploding onto the screen. Filumena is the lifetime mistress of a wealthy playboy who is planning to leave her and marry another woman. She will do anything in her power to stop this and marry him instead, including revealing that she has had three children she kept hidden from him, one of whom is his — but which one? A powerful balance of comedy and drama, with extraordinary performances from Mastroianni and Loren at their best, the film is presented for the first time on video both in subtitled Italian and spoken English, enabling a new appreciation of this quintessential play, first brought to the UK by Franco Zeffirelli and later showcased by Peter Hall with Dame Judi Dench. A timeless comedy of our all-too-human foibles.

yesterday, today & tomorrow

blu-ray

This delightful film is considered one of the true gems of Italian cinema, featuring three short stories, each starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, and directed by master filmmaker Vittorio De Sica. In this Oscar-winning film of comic tales of love and sex set across three cities, De Sica delivers his irrepressible touch: in Naples, Adelina sells cigarettes on the black market while avoiding prison thanks to a long string of pregnancies; in Milan, wealthy Anna tries to escape boredom through escapades with a struggling journalist—until he prangs her Rolls; and in Rome, “tart with a heart” Mara contends with a young priest’s infatuation with hilarious consequences. Three completely disparate sets of characters allow Loren and Mastroianni to once again demonstrate why they are the greatest screen couple of all time, crowned with an Oscar® for Best Foreign Picture and, of course, featuring the epoch-making Loren strip-tease that seduced generations. This is timeless, perfect cinema.

boccaccio 70′

blu-ray

Boccaccio ’70 brings together the major directors and brightest stars of the 1960s in a film that boldly takes on moralism and respectability. This collection features four iconic and delightful short films with stunning performances: The Temptations of Dr Antonio, directed by Federico Fellini and starring Anita Ekberg and Peppino De Filippo; The Job, directed by Luchino Visconti and starring Romy Schneider and Tomas Milian; The Raffle, directed by Vittorio De Sica and starring Sophia Loren; and Renzo e Luciana, directed by Mario Monicelli. Fellini, Visconti, De Sica, and Monicelli join forces with show-stoppers Loren, Ekberg, and Schneider in a social satire that lampoons Italian society of the 1960s. A sensuous pin-up on a gigantic poster comes to life to haunt a puritan, a married woman navigates her husband’s gambling and infidelities, a sacristan wins a night with a fairground beauty in a village lottery, and a married couple’s mishap enables them to buy their own home. These four arresting tales explore women’s empowerment and the sexual revolution during Italy’s 1960s boom years. This light-hearted hymn to life is presented for the first time in both English and original Italian, with improved subtitles, and shown in the filmmakers’ original widescreen format, now fully restored in HD.
