album of the month – big thief

artist: big thief
title: double infinity
release: 5th september 2025
It was winter in Manhattan. The streets were frozen, yet Big Thief and a collective of musicians rode bicycles to the Power Station on 53rd Street and back to Brooklyn every day for three weeks, tracking nine hours a day to create Double Infinity. In a warm wooden room steeped in history, the group improvised, discovered, and built arrangements together, capturing moments of spontaneity and collective energy.
Laraaji contributed drones on zither and iPad while singing intuitive melodies. Joshua Crumbly played bass, Mikey Buishas provided live tape loops and keys, Mikel Patrick Avery, Jon Nellen, and Caleb Michel handled percussion, Adam Brisbin played guitar, and Hannah Cohen, June McDoom, and Alena Spanger added background vocals. Alongside core members Adrianne, Buck, and James, the ensemble created a lush, immersive sound, produced and captured by longtime Big Thief collaborator Dom Monks.
The album is a meditation on presence, memory, and the passage of time, blending intimacy with expansiveness, moving between quiet reflection and euphoric release. Delicate vocal harmonies float over textured layers of instrumentation, while improvisation and live interplay give the songs a feeling of immediacy and warmth. There’s a sense of play and discovery in every note, a joy in collective creation that is both spontaneous and deliberate.
Double Infinity embraces emotional complexity, it’s an album that feels alive, breathing with the musicians as they move between vulnerability and exuberance, introspection and celebration. Each listening experience reveals subtle layers of sound and feeling, a testament to the communal spirit in which it was made.

Double infinity is available on fopp exclusive green vinyl / vinyl / cd
