Witchfinder General

With the English Civil War raging, Witchfinder Matthew Hopkins uses the fear and confusion caused by the conflict to enact his forms of cruelty and extortion on a small rural community. He and his sadistic assistant John Stearne exploit the uneducated villagers for cash and gold, laying waste to transgressors with their reign of torture and execution. But one man, a young soldier arrives to go after the pair in a fit of bloody revenge. Simply one of the most brutal British films of the late 60s, this Tigon-produced Michael Reeves (The Sorcerers) film featuring American horror star Vincent Price and Ian Ogilvy, offers up a maliciously violent polemic about the dangers of baying mobs and propaganda-fuelled cynical opportunists.

Miami Vice

Going back to the original TV show which he’d helped create, Michael Mann (Manhunter, Heat, Thief) wrote and directed this big-screen revisit of his well-loved property. Starring Colin Farrell (In Bruges, The Batman) and Jamie Foxx (Collateral, Django Unchained), this neo-noirish thriller drips with the filmmaker’s distinctive vision. Complex, cool and cinematically perfect, it’s a must for all completist collectors of Mann’s impressive back catalogue. With its brooding atmosphere, pulsing soundtrack and slick digital cinematography, it stands as one of the most ambitious reimaginings of a classic series.

Night of the Big Heat

A scorching picture from 1967, Night of the Big Heat is a sweat-inducing shocker based on the 1957 novel from John Lymington. The remote island of Fara is experiencing a stifling heat wave in the middle of winter, causing life, as the locals know it, to come to a halt. Tensions rise as the heat increases plus a high-pitched tone of unknown origin is incinerating the villagers. Directed by Hammer favourite, Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee alongside chisel-jawed Patrick Allen, Night of the Big Heat is sizzling British sci-fi at its most intense.

Mortuary

This twisted tale from director Howard Avedis is a prime slasher which arrived at the end of the stalk n’ slash craze and added a touch of giallo and devil worship to the mix. Christie (Mary Beth McDonough) is convinced her father’s death wasn’t an accident and tries to unlock the truth. Her trail of clues leads to the local mortuary where she uncovers ghastly horrors beyond her imagination. Probably best known for starring Bill Paxton as an embalmer (the movie is also known as Embalmed) who is a bit of a social misfit with an unhealthy, lifelong crush on Christie. Mortuary contains plenty of juicy set-pieces and bloodletting for fans of the genre to enjoy.
